Ask a Lot of Questions
In terms of best practices, I think it all starts with the most important one: Ask a lot of questions. This is one of the principles that I drive home to our sales team. There is a general theory that if youâre a salesperson, you must sell things. But thatâs not exactly right. The sales process is not just about blathering on and on about your product or service. Itâs really about learning the needs of the buyer. And to do that, you need to ask a lot of questions. Before we get started on any project or any concept, we try to ask as many questions as possible.
Some of this thinking comes from my own upbringing. With both of our parents working full time, my siblings and I were latchkey kids. In this summer, this meant that our parents would drop us off at our grandparentsâ house at about eight in the morning, and we would stay there until about six in the evening, when my mom got off work. I was very active, but at lunchtime, or when I wasnât playing outside, I would sit with my grandparents and just ask them questions.
I loved hearing their stories and learning about what it was like growing up during the Great Depression. My grandfather was a first-generation Greek immigrant, and my grandmother was second-generation Irish. She had to leave school at just fourteen to start working in a factory. Her main message to me was just to always work hard and save money. She was very frugal; saving money was very important. I remember her telling me stories about taking the bus with her girlfriend to go to New York City, just to experience life in the big city. My grandparents grew up in the Catskills, married young, moved down to the Newark area, had six kids, and eventually settled in the Toms River area near the Jersey shore. They worked hard for everything that they were able to achieve in life. They werenât wealthy by any stretch, but for uneducated first- and second-generation immigrants, they were able to provide a comfortable life for their six kids.
Both my parents came from very big families. Growing up, I remember going to weddings all the time. That was a different era. Recently, I asked my teenage daughter how many weddings she had been to. She said maybe one. I told her that when I was her age, I went to so many family weddings that I became a wedding DJ!
My grandfather was a busy body, always doing something. He could not sit still. He had been a teamster, and he worked tirelessly. He was the type of guy that, if we were sick at school, would drive over to pick us up. If he had to wait, he would pull weeds in front of the schoolyard just to keep busy. He also instilled in me some skills I would later use at MVP Interactive. It was kind of
